American Idol Season 16 winner Maddie Poppe released a new single on Friday. The track is titled “SOS I’m in Love,” and it seems to have been inspired by Poppe’s new relationship with her boyfriend Gabe Burdulis.

“I’ve been building this castle / Laid each brick on my own / ‘Cause nobody can break down / The walls of a heart made of stone,” Poppe sings to open the new song. “I was protected / Didn’t expect it / To all go so wrong.”

The track has a jazzy sound that shows off Poppe’s winning voice. The lyrics have a similar sentiment as her song “Peace of Mind,” in which she sings, “When something gets good I anticipate goodbye / But with you I’m running out of excuses / To run away and say I shouldn’t do this.”

In July, Poppe revealed that she’s been dating fellow musician Gabe Burdulis, further confirming her breakup with Idol runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson. When announcing “SOS I’m in Love” earlier this week, Poppe wrote that the song is “based on true events.”

Burdulis commented on the announcement, mentioning the “amazing song” and “freaking cute cover.” This prompted Poppe to reply and write, “think I owe you royalties for 100% inspiration on this one.”

The Singer Has Been Releasing a Lot of Music

After winning American Idol, Poppe released her album Whirlwind in 2019. Although she hasn’t announced another album on the way, the singer has been putting out a lot of new music over the past year or so.

She’s released the singles “One That Got Away,” “Peace of Mind,” “Screw You a Little Bit,” “Good Enough to Let You Go,” and now “SOS I’m in Love.” And it looks like Poppe has even more music on the way for fans to enjoy soon.

In June, Poppe shared that she would be releasing three songs in the next three months. That may or may not include her collaboration with Joshua Radin on a version of his song “Neverland.” Even if it does, there’s still one more song for Poppe to release soon.
