Profession: Actress and Film Director

Biography: As director and screenwriter of the phenomenally successful "Barbie" film, Greta Gerwig is the first solo female director with a film to gross over $1 billion. Gerwig co-wrote "Barbie" which starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling with Noah Baumbach, her frequent collaborator and partner.

Gerwig originally wanted to become a playwright, but turned to philosophy after not getting into her desired course. She then became a well-regarded actress in small independent films. In 2012 she appeared in Woody Allen's film "To Rome with Love".

Gerwig earned increasing acclaim for her acting and was nominated for a Golden Globe award nomination for her role in "Frances Ho" which she also co-wrote with Baumbach. In 2017 Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with "Ladybird" starring Saoirse Ronan. The film was nominated for five Academy award including Best Picture and won two Golden Globes.

Gerwig followed this in 2019 with an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women", also starring Saoirse Ronan alongside Meryl Streep and Florence Pugh. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and for five other awards, winning Best Costume Design. Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director in a controversial year when no woman was nominated for Best Director.
